Using light to medium weight yarn (homespun or like a bernat satin) and a 4.25mm crochet hook to achieve this beautiful cable crochet beanie hat. This hat will fit from 20” in circumference. Use a 4.5 for a little bit larger fit.

Ch4

Row1: 11dc in fourth ch from hook. Join on top of ch3 using ss. 12 sts.

Row2: ch2 and dc in same st (counts as 1 dc) *2dc in next dc* repeat from *to* 10 more times, dc in ss. Join on top of first dc using ss. 24 sts.

Row3: ch2 and fpdc around same st, fpdc around next dc, dc in each of the 2 sts just worked in behind the fpdc sts, *fpdc around the next 2 dc, dc in each of the 2 sts just worked in behind the fpdc sts*. Repeat from *to* 10 more times. Join on top of fpdc using ss. 48 sts.

Row4: ch2 and fpdc around first fpdc, fpdc and dc around and in next fpdc, dc and fpdc in and around next dc, fpdc around next dc, *fpdc around next fpdc, fpdc and dc around and in next fpdc, dc and fpdc in and around next dc, fpdc around next dc*. Repeat from *to* 10 more times. 72sts.

Note: The stitches worked in row 4 from * to * will be referred to as the “cable pattern”. So from here on out when I refer to stitches as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc- it is in reference to the 6 stitches within this cable pattern. But remember the first st could be a fpdc or a dc, depending what row you are on.

Row5: ch2 and dc in first fpdc, fptrc around 5th and 6th st of cable pattern, working in front of sts just worked, fptrc around 1st and 2nd st of cable pattern, dc in 6th st, *dc in next fptrc (1st st of cable pattern) fptrc around 5th and 6th st of cable pattern, working in front of sts just worked, fptrc around 1st and 2nd st of cable pattern, dc in 6th st*. Repeat from *to* 10 more times. Join on top of dc using ss. 72 sts.

Row6: ch2, fpdc around 2nd st of cable pattern, fpdc and dc around and in 3rd st of cable pattern, dc and fpdc in and around 4th st, fpdc around 5th st, (leaving the 6th and 1st dc sts untouched), *fpdc in 2nd st of cable pattern, fpdc and dc around and in 3rd st of cable pattern, dc and fpdc in and around 4th st, fpdc around 5th st*. Repeat from *to* 10 more times. Join on top of fpdc using ss. 72 sts

Row7: ch2 and fpdc around 1st st of cable pattern, fpdc around next st, dc in next 2 dc, fpdc in next two fpdc, *fpdc around first 2 sts of cable pattern, dc in next 2 sts, fpdc around last 2 sts of cable pattern*. Repeat from *to* 10 more times. Join on top of fpdc using ss. 72 sts

Row23:    Row 19: Ch1 and sc in same st, fphdc around 2 dc at the same time, * sc in next dc, fphdc around 2 dc at the same time*. Repeat from *to* 22 more times. Join on top of sc using ss. 48sts.

Row24 and Row25:   Row 20 and 21: ch1 and sc in same st, fphdc around fphdc, *sc in next sc, fphdc around fphdc*. Repeat from *to* 22 more times. Join on top of sc. 48 sts.
